Immigrants may be sponsored by their spouses or common law- partners if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents. After the application process is successfully processed, the sponsored party will obtain permanent residency status. This type of sponsorship program is part of the Family Class category, through which Canada welcomes a substantial number of new permanent residents annually.
The Government of Canada is strongly committed to keep families together and, as such, allows parents to sponsor their dependent children for Canadian immigration. The child needs to meet the definition of a dependant family member and the parent needs to meet the requirements of sponsorship. After the application is processed, the child will become a Canadian permanent resident.
Through the Parent and Grandparent Immigration Program, Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their parents and/or grandparents for Canadian permanent residency.
